Satistical Account of Scotland, 1951
This extract from 1951 outlines the grueling life of the fisher folk, and the change over the years to ring netting from long lines. For the women in particular this was a great improvement. No more getting up at 2:00 am to bait the lines.
There was also an improvement in the payment system: pay was still dependent on the catch, but a voluntary quota system was in place between boats.
